US Department statement about Mariem Yahya

Safwan Abd Almoniem Washington DC – sudan voices The United States is fully engaged diplomatically in the case of 27-year old Meriam Yahia Ibrahim Ishag who has been sentenced to death by hanging for apostasy after she refused to recant her Christian faith and declare herself a Muslim. She has also been sentenced to 100 lashes for adultery. Through the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum, the White House and the State Department we have communicated our strong concern at high levels of the Sudanese government about this case. We have also joined with other embassies in Khartoum to express our concern in a widely distributed public statement. U.S. Embassy officials have been engaged in this case from its earliest days, have attended all public hearings to date, and will closely monitor the appeals process in Khartoum, which we understand can be quite lengthy. We have heard from many, many Americans that they are deeply alarmed by Ms. Ishag’s plight. We have conveyed these views as well to the Government of Sudan. We call upon the Government of Sudan to respect the right to freedom of religion, including one’s right to change one’s faith or beliefs, a right which is enshrined in international human rights law as well as in Sudan’s own 2005 Interim Constitution. We call on the Sudanese legal authorities to approach this case with the compassion that is in keeping with the values of the Sudanese people.
